Church of the Ascension Stewardship Information

Church of the Ascension

and

Stewardship as a Way of Life

Just what is a stewardship parish?  This is a very good question and one that is very often asked.  Basically, being a stewardship parish means that we, as a community, try to live out the Gospel teaching.  And what teaching is that?  Well, in a nutshell, it means that we endeavor to live in a spirit of gratitude each and every day of our lives.

All of us are blessed with many gifts.  Even the next breath we take is a gift.  Throughout Christ's ministry on Earth, He talked about being grateful and about being good stewards of the gifts we are given.  We don't actually own anything.  All that we have - our time, our talents, our resources - are given to us to share with others.  We are charged wit developing our gifts and using them for God's glory.

Therefore, Church of the Ascension places high value on giving back to God proportionately to our blessings. We have hundreds upon hundreds of volunteers of all ages who generously give us their time and their talents to enhance our worship and sense of community.

Scripture teaches that we are to give 10 percent of our worldly income back to God.  Generally, this means giving four percent of income to the parish, one percent to Archdiocesan needs (Call to Share), and five percent to other charities.  If you have children at Ascension Catholic School, we request that nine percent of income be given to the parish and one percent to Archdiocesan needs.  That's it. Traditionally, Ascension has asked that a minimum pledge be based on our net income after taxes.  However, Scripture tells us that we should give the first fruits of our labors back to the Lord - this would mean a fair proportion of our gross income.  We respectfully urge all our parishioners to prayerfully follow the norms set by Scripture.

The concept of stewardship means that we all give out of gratitude and a need to give back.  Our parish supports 54 ministries which serve our members, the secular community, and people in need everywhere.  Each and every family is asked to live the stewardship way of life.  In this way, all of our parish needs are met with plenty of resources (prayer, volunteers, donations) left to care for our brothers and sisters.

With all that, there are some common questions that parents naturally have:

Q: What does this mean for me, and what is expected of me in order to have my child admitted to Ascension Catholic School?

A:  Ascension Catholic School has a priority enrollment process.  This means that each family wishing to register a child in the school fits somewhere on our list of priorities listed below.

1.  Current students from steward families*

2.  Current students who are not parish members

3.  Siblings of current students from steward families**

4.  Siblings of current students who are not parish members

5.  New students ranked according to the following:

                    a.  Length of membership in the parish and long-time evidence of parish stewardship

                    b.  Newer families in the parish with evidence from previous parish of active support and financial support

                    c.  Longer-term parishioners with little evidence of stewardship who are committed to becoming parish stewards

                    d.  Non-parish Catholic families who commit to pay tuition

                    e.  Families who are not Catholic who commit to pay tuition

*Financial stewardship is an essential part of our parish life, and all parishioners are called to contribute proportionate to their income to meet parish financial needs and obligations.  A good faith commitment and effort on the part of all is essential to the viability of our parish and its ministries.  Once enrolled, families must maintain their status as steward families in order to retain priority for the future year's enrollment.

**Students are considered siblings if their brother or sister was enrolled and performed sufficient academic work so as to receive a report card from Ascension Catholic School for the fourth quarter of the school year prior to the school year for which registration is requested.  Non-Catholic students are granted continuous enrollment based on pledging their time and talent and payment of their out-of-parish tuition.

Q:    I notice that "Non-Stewards" are listed lowest on the priority scale.  How is this "stewardship status" determined?

A:    Stewardship status is based on past involvement in Church of the Ascension or another Catholic parish.  This means that those who have consistently given an average of an hour a week of their time and talent, and who have given proportionately of their income on a consistent basis are considered "Stewards".   If a family has moved recently from another parish, whether in this Archdiocese or anywhere else, we require a letter confirming that family's stewardship status in their former parish.  Those families who can establish status over an average of three years are considered "historical stewards".  Historical stewards have a higher priority that those who are just establishing stewardship status in order to enroll their children in school.

Q:    If all families on the waiting list are in the same priority category, who decides who gets in?

A:    Beginning with the 2004/2005 enrollment year, Fr. Tank established an Admissions Committee.  If questions arise regarding how the priority system should be applied, those questions are considered and decided upon on a case by case basis, by the Admissions Committee.
